Student Introduction In the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the author shows the importance of acceptance in society and how much the role of the perfect woman is valued. However, Austen presents a character, Elizabeth, that does not fit into the perfect description of a woman and how a lady has the ability to be independent and strong-willed. The writer’s purpose is to shift from the establishment to the anti-establishment. “However” needs to be emphasized with purpose. There is a difference between what Austen shows and what Austen says! This writer hints at that understanding.

…that does not fit into the perfect description of a woman and how a lady has the ability to be independent and strong-willed. In the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the author shows the importance of being accepted by society and adhering to the defined role of the perfect woman. Into this society of rules and limitations, Austen presents Elizabeth, a young woman who defies the social expectations, proving that the rules, perhaps, are not perfect. …proving in the end that a perfect woman is defined by independence and strong-will, not subservience.

In her novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen tells a story of the social hierarchy that existed in rural England during the late 18th century. Her characters play a key role in defining the different social classes. One such character is Mr. Darcy, whose pride and arrogance define the privileged, upper class men.

Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence. Tell what you will prove. Student Topic Sentence: Mr. Bingley is a character well-liked by everyone around him because of his social skills. This is about plot. Point in thesis: Mr. Bingley exemplifies the ideal man in rural England in the late 18th century. The t.s. must support the point in the thesis. Possible Revision: Adhering to the social skills valued in society, Mr. Bingley is the epitome of a respected, well-received man of his time.

Do NOT write a plot summary to prove your point. Show how each example proves your point. As a result, … Because Darcy is …. Through this action… By questioning…

Edit and revise your essay. Expand your point to include the rest of the novel. For some, this will change your thesis a bit. For others, nothing will change except for added details and discussion The essay is to be four paragraphs: Intro paragraph, two body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph

No contractions (See Writing Reminders) Write in present tense. Underline the title of a novel. Make connections. Do NOT forget your thesis as you write. Reinforce your point throughout your essay.

Work is to be typed (See me if you have an issue with this Work is to be typed (See me if you have an issue with this.) Use Times Roman, 12 pt.
