Describe the beginning of the settlement period of the Americas Describe the beginning of the settlement period of the Americas. Focus on the social, cultural, religious, political, and economic achievements of the Natives BEFORE European conquest. Land-Bridge Nomads and large game Changes in climate led to smaller game hunting, farming (*maize) , settled communities, and urban centers (*Tenochtitlan), hierarchal societies Advanced technology (irrigation, communication, calendar) Homes varied (adapted to environments) Different trading practices, languages, and religions developed

Describe the social, cultural, religious, economic, and political changes for the Natives AFTER European conquest of the Americas Columbian Exchange Exposure to new diseases (smallpox, measles, flu) New weapons and animals helped hunting but escalated war There was an increase in the trading of furs and metals Europeans were interested in Christianizing and “civilizing” Natives were used as slaves, and then Africans were imported Bartolome de las Casas
