MY BACKGROUND I was born on July 24, 1897 at my grandparents’ home in Atchinson, Kansas.
BREAKING AVIATION RECORDS On May 20, 1932, exactly 5 years after the Lindbergh’s famous flight, I began the long journey across the Atlantic. I couldn’t drink coffee but needed to stay awake, so I used smelling salts. I pride myself on traveling light...a thermos of soup and a can of tomato juice sustained me.
