Using Shark Skin Pattern Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Final Project no.1432 Using Shark Skin Pattern By: Matanel Biton Moderator: Dr Itzik Sapir

Biological coupling When water from a natural source flows through a particular medium, micro-organisms that cling to different surfaces. . With time and under certain conditions, this coupling may cause a serious nuisance, to the point of complete blockage of the piping. This adherence is called biological coupling

Shark skin pattern The skin of the shark is built of lumps and sasses at intervals of 0.2-0.4 mm. This structure has been shown to reduce drag forces on the body and increase impulse forces produced by the body. The shark does not have a biological bond.

The aim of the project Construction of a machine for embedding shark skin texture on the inner wall of a drip pipe in three different intervals, at low cost to a traditional industry.

Research History “Biofilm structure and its influence on clogging in deep emitters distributing reclaimed waste water “(Dazhung Y, Zhihui B, Rowen M, Environmental Sciences 2009) “Micropatterned surface for the risk of catheter associated urinary tract infection” (Dazhung Y, Zhihui B, Rowen M, Environmental Sciences 2009) “Towards minimally fouling substrates: surface grafting and topography “(Wilson L, Schumacher J, Finaly J, Perry R, Polymer preprints 2005)

Historical uses

Drawings that simulate the Shark skin Methods Drawings that simulate the Shark skin

The experiment Combining art and science, shark-shaped plates were produced by a Judaica artist

Lab testing of shark skin pattern plates The experiment Lab testing of shark skin pattern plates

The experiment 90 sec 300 ℃

MMT test Lasts about 48 hours. Contains three stages. The resulting output is the percentage of biofouling chances of survival.

Samples experiment First experiment 05.05.2019 Second experiment 14.05.2019 Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Group 6 Group 7 Shark skin 0.4 mm Shark skin 0.3 mm Shark skin 0.2 mm No heat treatment, no skin pattern and no glue Only thermal treatment without pattern No thermal treatment without mold Sewage pipe

Experimental results No. Description 1 Only thermal treatment without pattern 2 3 No heat treatment, no skin pattern and no glue 4 Sewage pipe 5 Shark skin 0.2 mm 6 Shark skin 0.3 mm 7 Shark skin 0.4 mm

Results and conclusions Easy to integrate into the production process of the pipes. Technology is simple to implement. The production process is cheap and economical.
