Fires & Extinguishers

Did you ever stop & think that everybody would lose if we had a bad fire? If our facilities were severely damaged, some of us could be injured or lose our lives. Our Customers would lose because of loss of records.

If a fire occurs the employees should pull the fire alarm and call 911. Evacuating a building if a fire occurs. Employees should live the building in an orderly fashion. A designated person should check the restrooms to make sure everyone has left. Provisions should be made for the disabled employees. Do not use the elevators.

We have to understand So, what can we do to help control the fire potential? We have to understand that fire control depends on our knowledge of certain fundamental principles.

For a fire to start, there must be something to burn, and there must be heat or some other ignition source (like a spark). The Fire Triangle: All fires need a combination of 3 factors in order to survive. Fuel - paper, wood, oil, solvents, gas, etc. Heat – the degree necessary to vaporize fuel according to its nature Oxygen – normally, it should make up at least 15% of the air to sustain a fire. The greater the concentration, the brighter the blaze and the more rapid the combustion.

Use a Class A Fire Extinguisher for general combustible fires Fires Are Classified According To What Is Burning Class A -- Fires involve general combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, plastic or rags. Use a Class A Fire Extinguisher for general combustible fires

Use a Class B Fire Extinguisher on flammable liquid fires Fires Are Classified According To What Is Burning Class B -- Fires involve flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, grease or paint. Use a Class B Fire Extinguisher on flammable liquid fires

According To What Is Burning Use a Class C Fire Extinguisher Fires Are Classified According To What Is Burning Class C -- Fires involve electrical fires such as office equipment, switchgears motors, and heaters Use a Class C Fire Extinguisher on Electrical Fires

According To What Is Burning Use a Class D Fire Extinguisher Fires Are Classified According To What Is Burning Class D -- Fires involve metals such as potassium, sodium, aluminum and magnesium. Use a Class D Fire Extinguisher on metal fires

According To What Is Burning Use a Class K Fire Extinguisher Fires Are Classified According To What Is Burning Class K -- While cooking oils or fats are technically a subclass of flammable liquid/gas class, their high flash point is considered important enough to recognize separately. Use a Class K Fire Extinguisher on kitchen fires

Types of Fire Extinguishers Available The best type for office use is a multipurpose "ABC" type extinguisher. ABC type extinguishers generally use ammonium phosphate as the active chemical to extinguish a fire and are capable of putting out most common fires. A - Ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, hay, etc. B - Flammable liquids such as gas, oil, grease and other petroleum products. C - Electrical fires.

When Fighting A Fire Use The PASS Method P = Pull A =Aim S = Squeeze S = Sweep

The PASS Method Pull the extinguisher pin Aim at the base of the fire Squeeze the tip handle or lever Sweep from side to side until the fire is out

Rules For Fires Fires are very dangerous. 1. Pull the fire alarm 2. Call 911 3. Assist anyone in danger Fires are very dangerous. Be certain that you will not endanger yourself or others when attempting to put out a fire. The time to use an extinguisher is in the beginning stages of fire.

Rules For Fires Never fight a fire if you don't know what is burning. Never fight a fire if the fire is spreading rapidly beyond the spot where it started. Never fight a fire if you don't have adequate or appropriate equipment. Never fight a fire if you might inhale toxic smoke. Never fight a fire if your instincts tell you not to.

Rules For Fires If you don't know what is burning you don't know what type of extinguisher to use. If you don't have the correct type or large enough extinguisher, it is best not to try to fight the fire. Even if you have an ABC extinguisher, there may be something in the fire which is going to explode or produce highly toxic smoke.

Rules For Fires If the fire is producing large amounts of smoke that you would have to breathe in order to fight the fire, it’s best not to try. Gases from manmade materials can be fatal in very small amounts.

Rules For Fires Always position yourself with an exit or means of escape at your back before you attempt to use an extinguisher to put out a fire. In case a fire extinguisher malfunctions or something unexpected happens, you need to be able to get out quickly, and you don't want to become trapped. Just remember, always keep an exit at your back.

Rules For Fires If the fire is already spreading quickly, it is best to simply evacuate the building, closing doors and windows as you leave. – meet in the designated area of the parking lot.

Rules For Fires If you are uncomfortable with the situation for any reason, just let the fire department do their job. We do not require anyone to fight a fire. The first concern is the safety of our greatest asset -- YOU!

Please, Pause the Presentation, And Take A Little Quiz, To See What You Remember

We REQUIRE all of our employees to fight a fire whenever possible. True False True False

Which of these statements is false? The time to use an extinguisher is at the start of the fire. Never fight a fire if you might inhale toxic smoke. Never fight a fire if you don't know what is burning. If you don't have access to an extinguisher, try baking soda or table salt. The time to use an extinguisher is at the start of the fire.
