SCOHTS Strategic Plan Goal 3: Promoting Key Safety Legislation Tony Kane SCOHTS 2011 Annual Meeting Austin, Texas

Goal 3 – Promote Key Safety Legislation Goal 3 - Identify and promote key national and state safety legislation. Support federal legislation that improves safety and increases safety funding. Support and monitor model state legislation in key safety areas.

Strategy 1 – Support Federal Legislation Action 1 – discuss opportunities for other organizations to join the joint reauthorization statement developed by the State Highway Safety Alliance. Meet with associations Update joint statement Report to SCOHTS

Strategy 1 – Support Federal Legislation Action 2 – AASHTO, GHSA and CVSA, and other members of the State Highway Safety Alliance will meet with key authorizing committees in Congress to discuss the associations’ joint positions on related federal legislation. Report to SCOHTS

Strategy 2 – Support and Monitor Model State Legislation Action 1 – Participate in safety partners’ efforts to develop model state legislation on key safety issues. Action 2 – Monitor new state legislation related to highway safety. Action 3 – Communicate current status, best practices and lessons learned.

Strategy 2 – Support and Monitor Model State Legislation Safety Management Task Group 5 Represent member departments’ interests in discussions to develop model state safety legislation Develop and share best practices Provide updates to SCOHTS and Safety Management

Discussion Associations to coordinate with? Model state safety legislation efforts? Revise scope of Task Group 5?
