February 25, 2015 Goal: Debate the merits of Imperialism QOD: Read Inquirer article/discussion Agenda: Scenarios, PowerPoint with notes HW: Find out what happened to the USS Maine. Research and in one paragraph with specific proof and source

Now the real QOD: QOD: With a partner, make a list of five countries you consider powerful and five countries you consider weak The goal today is to identify the process that America went through to gain new land

Intervention or Isolation There are two sides to every story. During this age of US expansion (imperialism), people choose one side or the other Scenarios Your job is to weigh the pros and cons of each scenario, and decide whether to intervene or take an isolationist approach

How do nations become imperialist countries? Culture- diverse with religion, language, heritage, and nationalism Strong Government IMPERIALISM- A country that dominates over weaker nations by controlling it Economic- Country has money and a strong economy Militarism- strong navy and army to protect itself and other nations

Pros and Cons of US Expansion Gain strategic bases *naval power is key! Gain status around world/power to acquire land Spread democracy Convert “third world” natives to Christianity Expand Big Business Resources/raw materials CONS: Look like a bully, get a bad reputation Natives may not like us, oppress them  If we help countries now, they may EXPECT it (become the world’s police force/helping hand)

When and WHY did America become an “imperial” nation? Late 19th century America needed to expand Build up of navy and sea power was needed Big Business-wanted to expand markets and find new products US wanted to dominate/“police” the Western Hemisphere Land = power

THE ROOSEVELT CORROLLARY Teddy said: 1. Europe needed to stay out of the Western Hemisphere (Monroe Doctrine) 2. Adds: Any problems in Latin America, the US WILL INTERVENE to protect it’s interest. US is “Continent Police” This is his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfsfoFqsFk4

Land America had their eyes on at the turn of the century…. WHY THESE PLACES?
