Class Structure This class is designed for students with an intermediate-advanced level of English 이 수업은 중급-고급 영어 레벨의 수준으로 진행됩니다. Business English (3044) Media English (2035) EGC 1 & 2 (생활영어)

Class Structure Students will talk about, listen to, read and write about various topics: This class is primarily a discussion class (so be ready to speak!!!), in which we will talk about… Western culture from internet clips, TV shows, movies, and music Various topics about Western culture Differences between Western culture/Korean culture

Areas of Improvement English speaking (vocabulary, structures, idioms, slang, expressions, and pronunciation) English listening Common speaking errors English learners make Knowledge about Western culture in and how does it compare with Korea and other culture’s cultures Although this is a composition class, most of the areas of improvement are focused on speaking, listening and vocabulary – so come ready to participate!!!

Attendance/Participation 10% Marks Attendance/Participation 10% Quiz 10% Video Presentation 15% Final Interview 10% Midterm Exam 25% Final Exam 30%

Attendance/Participation (10%) Attendance is mandatory (except for the first week of classes) so that students are in class and participating. If you are not here, you cannot participate and therefore your mark will be lower. For each class absent the student will get -1% If you have an excuse you have 2 weeks to give the professor an excuse note. It is the student’s responsibility to give the excuse note to the professor. CNU Policy (김영란범): If a student is absent for over 25% of the class time, the student will receive an automatic fail (F grade).

Attendance/Participation (10%) Students who often come late to class will also have a lower mark. If you are over 10 minutes late (-0.5%) If you are absent for half the class, that will count as an absent (-1%) If your previous class is far away, please inform the teacher. If you are absent for a quiz or exam, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the professor and set up a date for a makeup quiz/exam.

Quiz (10%) There is a quiz – one before the midterm exam, the first session of class. The quiz will cover vocabulary and ideas we have learned in class. It is a warmup before the midterm test. The quiz will be Thursday, Oct 10 in class.

Video Presentation (15%) There is a video presentation (in groups of 2 or alone). This will be during the second semester. The assignment is 15% of your mark. The presentation due date will be Tuesday, Dec 3 in class.

Interview (10%) Students will have a one-on-one interview with the teacher during the second semester of class (before the final exam). This interview will be held outside of class hours and students will be asked their opinion about various topics. The interview will be 15 minutes. The interview is 10% of your final mark. The interview is near the end of Nov/start of Dec.

Exams (55%) Midterm Exam (25%) Tuesday, Oct 29th – class time Final Exam (30%) Tuesday, Dec 17th – class time Both exams are written Format: Listening, Vocabulary, Definition, Short Answers, Common Mistakes, Long Answers These dates are subject to change based on Chonnam National University scheduling

Evaluation: 상대평가 Exchange students, transfer students and graduate school students are not marked according to the 상대평가 system. If you are an exchange, transfer or graduate school student, you will be marked according to your final score.

Relative Evaluation 상대평가 (Korean students) 100 – 95% A+ Top 30% of Korean students – a maximum of 30% 94 – 90% A 89 – 85% B+ Middle 40% of Korean students – a maximum of 70% (B or higher) 84 – 80% B 79 – 75% C+ Bottom 30% of Korean students – a minimum of 30% (below a B) 74 – 70% C 69 – 65% D+ 64 – 60 % D below 60% F 절대평가 (International students / Graduate School students / Exchange students)

The difference between an A and a B could be 1% (or less) Why did 김봉자 get an B but 노승현 get a C+?

Course Reader The course reader is available in the Humanities Building copy shop or you can download and print your own copy from my website – www.safenglish.wordpress.com The ppts and clips we use in class will also be available on the website.

Class Rules Come to class / try not to be late Bring the course reader to class Participate (try to talk) Try to use English in class Put your cellphone on manner mode You’re allowed to eat, just clean up If you are falling behind in class and cannot keep up please tell me as soon as possible. Please don’t tell me during the final weeks of class that you are having problems, come talk to me at the soonest possible time.
