S4 Revision Time Now that you have finished your speaking … it is not over …yet! With the help of this ppt you will be able to remember important tips for your Listening and Reading paper

In the Exam In both exams, you get 5 minutes to read through the paper Make sure you read the questions carefully and work out what information you need to listen for You dont need to understand every word Check how many marks are given in brackets for each question Look out for any cognates but beware of faux amis (false friends)

Faux amis A few of the more common faux amis: grand – big large - wide la journée – day le parking - car park la pièce - room, coin, play la cave – cellar joli – pretty la veste – acket mince – slim le médecin – doctor la monnaie – change le car – coach le crayon – pencil le pain - bread les affaires – business les baskets – trainers la place - square, seat, room

Learn your numbers Numbers are essential !!! You need for time, dates and prices …so learn them Pay attention to : –deux / dix / douze –trois / treize –vingt et un / trente et un etc –cent / deux cents –quarante / quatre-vingts

Linking words Linking words are ESSENTIAL to get your answers right in the questions of P/N/P+N ( in both papers ) Look for: –Addition : et, avec, aussi, ou, surtout –Showing contrast: mais, cependant, alors, par contre, quand même –Giving opinions : je pense que, je crois que, à mon avis, parce que

Likes and dislikes Make sure you recognise: –jaime –je naime pas –je préfére –je déteste And reasons, using parce que or puisque

Questions, questions, questions quest-ce quil y a? où? quand? quel/quelle? comment? It is very important that you recognise all question words qui/avec qui? combien (de)? pourquoi/pourquoi pas? est-ce que/qu? quest-ce que/qu?

Opinions You need to be able to recognise plenty of adjectives Check adjectives for describing PERSONALITY ( always a favourite in the exam ) Good bank of adjectives in Métro

Vocabulary Pay special attention to most difficult vocabulary on WEATHER / ENVIRONMENT / HOUSE CHORES / FURNITURE But dont understimate PLACES / FOOD AND DRINK / DIRECTIONS / SCHOOL IT IS IMPORTANT that you learn vocabulary suggested by the exam board ( see specification AQA –

Listening-specific Tips (1) You will hear each extract two or three times. You do not necessarily need to answer in full sentences, but make sure that you include all the details you have been asked for. The answer may not be explicitly stated in the recording - you may be asked about attitudes, feelings or to record a general comment. Check that the answers you give make sense Make sure that you answer the question that you have been asked! After writing an answer, go back and read the question again.

Listening-specific Tips (2) "quand?" is looking for a time or a date; "qui?" is looking for a person. Even if you have understood the answer the first time, listen carefully when the extract is repeated to check your answer You will not lose marks for incorrect spellings or grammar; just make sure that a French person could understand your answers. Don't leave blanks. If you really can't understand what's been said, jot down a word or some of the words you've heard.

Where to practise Listening Use the following websites: – /french/ /french/ – bl-listeningindex.htmhttp://french.about.com/library/listening/ bl-listeningindex.htm – – ulum/modlang/french/index_fr_video.htmhttp:// ulum/modlang/french/index_fr_video.htm - french/metro-pour-lecosse-vert-and-rouge- vocabulary/ french/metro-pour-lecosse-vert-and-rouge- vocabulary/
