1A2 Geography 17th November, 2014

Learning outcomes: By the end of today’s lesson, you will be able to: Identify the three major kinds of industrial region in the world. Give examples of countries in each of these regions. Explain why a company may choose to locate in one of these regions.

3 Major Industrial Regions Industrialised regions. Newly-industrialised regions. Industrially-emergent regions. All countries and regions grouped together and placed in one of these categories based on level of industrial development.

Industrialised Regions USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. Industrialised since the Industrial Revolution. Labour costs high. Located in the developed world.

Newly-industrialised Regions India, China & South East Asia, Mexico and Brazil. MNCs attracted by cheap labour. Products produced include shoes, clothes and electronic goods.

Industrially-emergent Regions Include countries in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Asia and South America. Very little manufacturing. May become a more attractive location in the future when companies seek to relocate as wages in Asia increase.

Over to you! Take a piece of paper. On one side, write the name of a country; on the other side, write the name of a product. Stick this piece of paper to the map of the world. Explain why the company that makes the product you have mentioned would locate in the country you have chosen.
