Chapter 2 Lesson 1 The Growth of Trade

Advances that paved the way for European exploration Shipbuilding - advances in shipbuilding meant ships could sail across the open ocean Carrack - large enough to carry supplies for a long voyage (Santa Maria) Caravels - smaller but easier to handle, could sail close to shore (Nina, Pinta) Maps - updated maps prior to Columbus Tools - compass, astrolabe, quadrant All three, tools to help navigate

Columbus exploring the world Christopher Columbus convinces Queen Isabella of Spain to fund his expedition. She agrees because: Columbus promised to bring Christianity to any lands he finds And to find a new trade route to Asia= Spain would grow rich from increased trade August 3, 1492 – Columbus sailed the ocean blue. October 12, 1492 - Columbus and his crew spot land! Columbus believed he had landed in the East Indies (India/Asia) But he really landed in the West Indies (Bahamas) 3 more voyages - Hispaniola, Cuba, and Jamaica. He also would go on to map the coastline of Central America.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1513) Amerigo Vespucci (1502) Sailed South America’s Coast; discovered South America was not part of Asia; people called the land “America” in his honor Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1513) discovered vast body of water (later called Pacific Ocean) and claimed the lands along it as Spain’s Ferdinand Magellan (1520) Named the pacific ocean “Pacific” because it was calm; 1st ship to circumnavigate (sail around) the world,

The Columbian Exchange Exchange of people, plants, animals, and germs between the Eastern and Western hemispheres. To Americas: crops, livestock (animals), diseases, and enslaved people To Europe: crops, animals, and diseases too
