That can Grow Your Marriage 8 Financial Basics That can Grow Your Marriage

Basic #1 Always communicate.

When I’m Feeling Down, Buying Something Makes Me Feel Better

So they are no longer two but one flesh. Matthew 19:6

Basic #2 Surround yourself with trusted advisors.

I Regularly ask others for input regarding whether or not they believe I am managing my money well

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisors they succeed. Proverbs 15:22

Basic #3 Know all the facts.

Each Month I know where all of my money goes because I systematically track my expenses

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. Proverbs 18:15

Basic #4 Have a plan.

I Live on a budget and compare my actual expenses to my budget at least once a month

The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 21:5

Basic #4 Give Something Get $500-1000 in your checking account Pay off debt, especially credit card debt Create an emergency fund equivalent to 3-6 months of expenses Start saving for the future

Excluding a home mortgage, my debt from car loans, student loans, credit card is approximately… $? Per Person

Basic #5 Never compare yourself to others and advertisements/media

When I compare myself to others, I often feel like I have less than others

Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world, but if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8

Basic #6 Budget money for each person to spend

I believe I use money on things that align with my significant other’s goals

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interest of others. Philippians 2:4

Basic #7 Don’t let income determine your lifestyle.

I expect that my income will continue to increase as I get older

“…Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.” Proverbs 30:8-9

Basic #8 Make giving a priority

Each month I give a percentage of my income to a non-profit organization

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all. In Your hand are power and might, and in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12

Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7

Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And He said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4

That can Grow Your Marriage 8 Financial Basics That can Grow Your Marriage Q&A

Discussion Questions Are you a spender or a saver? Does your significant other agree with your assessment? Have you and your significant other discussed any financial habits that make you nervous? If so, how do you think you will address them? Who should be in charge of the budget if you get married? What responsibilities should the other have in regards to money? How do the concepts of oneness and spiritual leadership apply to the budget and finances/stewardship? How has your family of origin affected your view of giving, spending, saving, debt, etc…? How do you personally reconcile the challenge of biblical stewardship and the reality of living in an extremely materialistic city? Would you consider yourself faithful in managing the resources God has stewarded you? Why or why not? Do you see giving/tithing as an expense or as an investment?
