Collapse of the Soviet Union Vocabulary Détente – period in the 1970s during which there was an easing of tensions between the United States & the Soviet Union Perestroika – restructuring of the government & the economy in the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev in the mid-1980s Glasnost – period of openness called for in the mid- 1980s by Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union Voice – to tell people your opinion or feelings about a particular subject
