Gender as Social Construction by Stephane Yaovi Adjagbo
Introduction These days, there is a diverse discussion in society about what the term “gender” means exactly. People have different opinions on the issue. Some are more likely to refer to gender as a biological or genetic trait. In this changing world, and across its many different cultures, gender tends to be most often associated with the natural distinctions of sex. It is then a huge sociological concern. To underline the meaning of gender, three essential aspects such; 1) as gender work, 2) power and oppression, and 3) family responsibilities will be the main points of focus.
As far as I am concerned, gender is definitely a social construction As far as I am concerned, gender is definitely a social construction. It is a sociological concern. Thesis Statement
. Gender Work . Power & Oppression Family Responsibilities
Gender Work: (the different specific behaviors and responsibilities attributed men and women in the workplace.) In the view point of some people, certain responsibilities such as being President of a country are for men only, and not for women. EX: referring to the view point of the great mass of American population, people did not vote for Hillary Clinton because of her gender or identity of being female.
Gender Work Issues in American Business. This is happening also in our workplaces. Co-workers in an X company are more likely to have men as their leaders, than having a woman in a position of authority.
Power & Oppression (physical activities and strength of women versus men) People tend to agree that men are physically stronger than women. They say women cannot do physically demanding work because they are female. EX: women in the military. What do you think about this? Are they not women? Study has showed that women comprise 19.5 percent of officers and enlisted members in the U.S Air Force.
Family Responsibilities In the patriarchal society even nowadays, some people attribute domestic responsibilities to women, where women are more likely to be the one to take care of children and their husband. But the point is that the world is changing and we have to treat every single individual as an "equal". Ex: Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe is referred to a woman because he is a lazy man, sitting on the property of his wife.
Conclusion Clearly, gender refers to these specific points such as gender work, power and oppression, and family responsibilities, serve as a relevant aspect to understand gender as social construction. We can then infer that men and women are equal, and hopefully the next generation will nicely welcome gender equality as a basic social conception.
