Level 4 Calder Mobiles Drawn from the achievement standards Overview Students explore the art practice and themes of Alexander Calder’s artworks. Through the creative process students plan, design and construct their own hanging sculpture inspired by the artwork of Alexander Calder. Learning intentions Students observe and analyse Alexander Calder’s artworks to understand art practice. Students plan an artwork proposing the ideas and materials that could be used to express their ideas. Students construct a mobile artwork by combining various materials and considering visual conventions to create balance. Students plan their artwork in their art journal. 3 Students design a hanging sculpture and evaluate the design by writing reflective notes. Students design their sculpture. They experiment with different materials and techniques. They document their thinking in their art journals. 4 - 8 Students construct a mobile artwork by combining various materials and considering visual conventions to create balance. Students create their sculpture. 9 Students evaluate their artwork. They compare their art practice and artworks to Calder’s work. Students evaluate their sculptures, comparing them with Calder’s. They also discuss the presentation of their artworks.
