Use materials, techniques, technologies and processes, and explore visual conventions to make artworks. They use materials, visual conventions, techniques and processes to communicate their ideas. Create and display artworks, describing how ideas are expressed to an audience. They discuss and evaluate the art making processes, materials and techniques they use to express their ideas. Identify and discuss how ideas are expressed in a range of places and cultures.

Level 4 Calder Mobiles Drawn from the achievement standards Overview Students explore the art practice and themes of Alexander Calder’s artworks. Through the creative process students plan, design and construct their own hanging sculpture inspired by the artwork of Alexander Calder. Learning intentions Students observe and analyse Alexander Calder’s artworks to understand art practice. Students plan an artwork proposing the ideas and materials that could be used to express their ideas. Students construct a mobile artwork by combining various materials and considering visual conventions to create balance. Students evaluate their artwork and compare their art practice and artworks to Alexander Calder’s work. Drawn from the achievement standards

Students use visual arts language and referring to the visual conventions. Class discussion of the works of Alexander Calder. Students use thinking tools and mind mapping to discuss the artist’s practice, ideas and use of visual conventions. 2 Students plan an artwork proposing the ideas and materials that could be used to express their ideas. Students plan their artwork in their art journal. 3 Students design a hanging sculpture and evaluate the design by writing reflective notes. Students design their sculpture. They experiment with different materials and techniques. They document their thinking in their art journals. 4 - 8 Students construct a mobile artwork by combining various materials and considering visual conventions to create balance. Students create their sculpture. 9 Students evaluate their artwork. They compare their art practice and artworks to Calder’s work. Students evaluate their sculptures, comparing them with Calder’s. They also discuss the presentation of their artworks.
