DESERT BIOME
LOCATION Located toward middle latitudes above and below the equator. Covers about 20% of Earth’s surface.
TEMPERATURES Hot deserts reach temperatures of 110°F during the day and can drop as low as 50°F at night.
PRECIPITATION Deserts are characterized by their lack of rain. Annual rainfalls average between 10-25 cm or 4-10 inches per year.
ANIMALS Animals are typically active at night and burrow underground to stay cool during the day. 1st level consumers are ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, birds, and big horn sheep.
ANIMALS 2nd and 3rd level consumers are snakes, owls, foxes, coyotes, and armadillo lizards
PLANTS Various types of cacti such as barrel cacti, prickly pear cacti, and Saguaro cacti. Other plants include small woody shrubs, Mojave aster, and yucca plants
