KO meeting, Brussels, July 4th 2018 The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 731166 HOVER WP8- Effective monitoring of emerging contaminants: development and validation of new assessment methods KO meeting, Brussels, July 4th 2018 Hydrogeological processes and Geological settings over Europe controlling dissolved geogenic and anthropogenic elements in groundwater of relevance to human health and the status of dependent ecosystems - HOVER

WP8 Objectives Develop a consistent approach to GW monitoring for Organic Emerging Contaminants (ECs) in terms of Sampling Site selection Monitoring frequency Methodology (including analytical techniques) To ensure it is effective and data are comparable across the range of European geological and environmental settings.

WP8 Objectives Assessment of status and scope of monitoring of groundwater for organic emerging contaminants (ECs) across Europe Develop recommendation for statistical analysis of monitoring data and evaluate existing results in terms of geological setting and land use/anthropogenic activities Provide multi-country/pan European information GIS layers on selected ECs Develop recommendations to enable effective monitoring for current / future emerging contaminants and key pollutants of concern on a Europe-wide basis Develop indicators based on risk-assessment principles to link the potential leaching of ECs in groundwater with geological setting and land use, anthropogenic activities, chemical and hazard properties and co-occurring tracers. Scope of monitoring = portée de la surveillance

Timeline

Task 8.1: Review of GW occurrence data, sampling and analytical methods for ECs across Europe (NERC) Review of existing monitoring results for organic ECs for each partner across Europe (national studies considered as a priority) ECs sampling methods – including both passive and active samplers, and macro and micro biomonitoring (linked to WP5) Analytical methods – ranging from specific compound suites to screening and non-target screening methods. Collection and review of results = DBASE? Identification of results with high quality and comparable data Mapping of comparable ECs occurrence data at European scale.

Task 8.1: Review of GW occurrence data, sampling and analytical methods for ECs across Europe (NERC) What we need: Identify available European dataset (each GeoERA partners) Template for data collection (sampling method; analytical method; limit of quantification…) Minimum criteria (meta data) to ensure the relevance and the comparability of collected (geological setting and land use, anthropogenic activities, wells technical description) …

Task 8.2: Relationship of ECs with environmental setting (IGME) Assessment of the relationship of detected compounds in GW with hydrogeological characteristics, anthropogenic activities, and hydro-climatic and environmental settings ! In relation to WP3, WP5, WP6 and WP7 ! Statistical tests for discriminant and canonical variate analysis to identify natural and anthropogenic forcing factors which may relate the presence of ECs in GW. Using the data and metadata gathered in Task 1 hydrological considerations (GW recharge, age and vulnerability and redox status) anthropogenic activities/land use management considerations.

Task 8.2: Relationship of ECs with environmental setting (IGME) Inventory of potential usage and origins of ECs of high concern DBASE? Identification of compounds known as being characteristic of one specific pressure to assess links between land use and ECs occurrence in GW Co-occurring contaminants and tracers will be statistically identified What is the appropriate statistical test to do that?

Task 8.3: European sampling and interlaboratory testing (TNO) European sampling campaign Interlaboratory testing Where? a number of pilot areas potential hotspots for emerging contaminants transport in Europe Test effective monitoring in practice: On specific potentially contaminated sites Using hypotheses and results of: Task 8.1 (existing data) & Task 8.2 (relation of ECs with environmental setting)

Task 8.3: European sampling and interlaboratory testing (TNO) Collect existing data (Brabant, Limburg, Flanders) New sampling campaign and interlaboratory testing Develop monitoring strategy together with European partners Sampling: Springs Mergelland South-Limburg Vulnerable areas Province Noord- Brabant Relate ECs to groundwater age to discover patterns in time

Task 8.4: Identification of ECs of high concern in connection with European initiative (BRGM) Identification of organic ECs of high importance to groundwater On the basis of their properties (mobility, degradability and toxicity and eco-toxicity) usage at the EU scale Novel indicators will be developed, tested and validated using the pan- European occurrence data collected in Tasks 1 and 3 Lopez et al., STOTEN, 2015

Task 8.4: Identification of ECs of high concern in connection with European initiative (BRGM) Ex1. GW Watch List concept Methods that combine and aggregate occurrence data chemical properties prioritisation GW leaching potential and hazard Ex2. NORMAN decision tree for GW Lapworth et al., in prep

Task 8.5: Development of monitoring recommendations (BRGM) Setting up an effective monitoring network for GW List of GW sampling sites List of organic ECs of high concern for GW Methods for sampling Methods for analysing => Develop a framework for establishing key parameters and appropriate monitoring methodologies for groundwater to obtain comparable European data.

Task 8.5: Development of monitoring recommendations (BRGM) Development of monitoring recommendations appropriate for the range of partner backgrounds and expertise. Start with a review of existing national recommendations A rigorous statistical approach will be used to inform this process to ensure an optimal number of sites and substances to deliver a sustainable and cost-effective approach for future monitoring => At the moment BRGM leads but is there other volunteer?
