Kingdom Discussion Questions: What comes to mind when you hear the word “kingdom”? What are your thoughts on who establishes, controls and protects a kingdom? Do you think God’s kingdom is about a place or about the decision to live under his rule? Explain. What type of governing system do you think would be used in the kingdom of God? What might some of the differences be between living in God’s kingdom and living in a worldly kingdom or your own kingdom?

Mat 3:1-2  In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was,  (2)  “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” According to John’s message, what are two steps in being included in God’s Kingdom? Why do you think that both of those steps are vital, not just one or the other? When John said, “the Kingdom of Heaven is near” what do you think he was referring to? Why do you think John went to the wilderness to begin preaching this message?

Mat 5:17-20 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come Mat 5:17-20  “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.  (18)  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.  (19)  So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.  (20)  “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven! Why do you think Jesus wanted to make sure that people didn’t misunderstand his purpose? In your opinion, why did Jesus tell us that not even the smallest detail of God’s law will not disappear until its purpose is achieved? According to Jesus what is the consequence of ignoring the commandments and teaching others to do the same? What do you think Jesus meant by our righteousness being better that the teachers of religious law (Pharisee’s)? What is the consequence of not being more righteous than the teachers and how can we be more righteous than them?

Mat 7:21-23 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord. Lord Mat 7:21-23  “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.  (22)  On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’  (23)  But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ Contrary to many modern teachings and belief’s, Jesus says that “not everyone who calls out to me…will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Why do you think he would be so exclusive? If we keep the teachings of Jesus in the context of being “kingdom minded”, is there room for democracy, wiggle-room or leaning on our own understandings or beliefs? Explain? Why do you think so few people accept a kingdom mentality or choose to live in this manner? What is the consequence of not following his kingdom plan according to verse 23?
