Purpose Sabbatical and Difference-in-Pay leaves shall be for purposes that provide a benefit to the University, such as research, scholarly and creative activity, instructional improvement or faculty retraining, including study and/or travel in connection with any of the above.

Unit 3 Collective Bargaining Agreement Articles 27 & 28 https://www2.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor- and-employee-relations/Documents/unit3-cfa/article27.pdf https://www2.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor- and-employee-relations/Documents/unit3-cfa/article28.pdf

Eligibility to Take Leaves First Sabbatical/DIP 6 years full-time credited service (CBA Article 27.2) Served full-time for six (6) years at that campus in the preceding seven (7) year period prior to the leave Example: Hired Fall 2017 Year 1 – 2017-18 Year 2 – 2018-19 Year 3 – 2019-20 Year 4 – 2020-21 Year 5 – 2021-22 Year 6 – 2022-23 eligible to apply for sabbatical for the 2023-24 academic year

Subsequent Sabbatical 6 years full-time credited service since last Sabbatical/DIP Subsequent DIP 3 years full-time credited service since last Sabbatical/DIP NOTE: Credit toward tenure (2 years max) is also credited toward first Sabbatical/DIP eligibility period. NOTE: Professional leave without pay (1 year max) can be credited toward sabbatical eligibility period.

Availability of Sabbatical/DIP Leaves Sabbatical Leaves Minimum of 12% of faculty eligible for Sabbaticals granted each year Article 27.8. Leaves granted beyond the 12% minimum are dependent upon department statement, college recommendation and final decision of the Provost. Two-semester sabbatical leaves (or equivalent months off for 12-month unit 3 employees) are apart from and in addition to the 12% minimum. DIP Leaves Number of DIP leaves granted is dependent upon department statement, department committee recommendation, college recommendation and final decision of the Provost.

Duration & Salary SABBATICAL Academic Year faculty/librarian/counselor: One semester at full salary (6 pay checks) Two semesters at one-half (50%) of full salary (12 pay checks) 12 month faculty/librarian/counselor: Four months at full salary Eight months at one-half (50%) of full salary The start date of a sabbatical for a 12-month faculty employee with instructional responsibilities shall coincide with the start date of the appropriate academic term. Department Chair: Faculty employees serving as department chairs will not receive the department chair stipend while on sabbatical leave For a split position with both academic year and 12-month components: The higher appointment time base will normally be used to establish whether the faculty unit employee is placed into an academic year position or a 12-month position for the sabbatical. Upon request of the faculty unit employee and approval of the appropriate administrator, a faculty unit employee whose majority appointment is on a 12-month basis may be assigned to an academic year position for the sabbatical

Duration & Salary cont….. DIFFERENCE-IN-PAY LEAVES A difference-in-pay leave may be approved for one (1) or more semesters or months as appropriate to the appointment. Difference in pay leaves are compensated at a rate determined by a formula contained in the collective bargaining agreement, Article 28.3. The salary for a difference in pay leave for a Unit 3 employee shall be the difference between the Unit 3 employee’s salary and the minimum salary of the lowest comparable rank (Lecturer A/Instructor/or equivalent).   Example #1: [Current monthly base pay] – [current instructor (Lect A or equivalent) base monthly pay of $4,126 * subject to change in CSU salary schedule] DIP monthly salary: $6,000 - $4,126 = $1,874 per month DIP salary Example #2: Full Professor at SSI maximum of salary range earns more with a one-year DIP than with a one-year Sabbatical. DIP vs. Sabbatical monthly salary $8,548÷2 = $4,274 (1-year Sabbatical Leave) $8,548-$4,126 = $4,422 (1-year DIP Leave)

Additional/Outside Employment Additional/outside employment while on Sabbatical/DIP Leave must be pre- approved by the President (or designee) Article 27.18 & 28.14. The Sabbatical/DIP applications contain a place to preliminarily indicate the nature of the employment, the approximate amount of compensation, the time involved, and whether the employment enhances the proposed activity or is completely separate. A formal request must be submitted to the Office of Faculty Advancement (OFA) with the recommendations of the department chair and dean. OFA will forward to the Provost (President’s designee) for consideration and final decision. Notification of the decision will be sent to the requesting faculty. http://www.csus.edu/acaf/faculty/docs/facultydocs/sabb-dip_additional-or- outside-employment.pdf
