Why is Water so Cool?

Water is a Polar Molecule Polar Molecule: an uneven distribution of electrons. Negative Pole is near the O because the electrons (-) spend more time around the Oxygen end Positive Pole is near the H

Hydrogen Bonding The partial (+) and (-) charges cause molecules of water to attract each other. Not as strong as covalent or ionic bonds, but they are the strongest bonds that form between molecules.

Cohesion vs. Adhesion cohesion!! Adhesion!! Cohesion: attraction between molecules of the same substance…Water. Adhesion: attraction between molecules of different substances…Water and glass. cohesion!! Adhesion!!

Acids, Bases and pH A water molecule can react to form ions H20 H+ + OH- Water Hydrogen ion + Hydroxide ion

The pH Scale Used to indicate the concentration of H+ ions in solution. Scale Ranges from 0-14 Pure Water pH = 7 pH < 7 = Acidic pH > 7 = Basic

Acids and Bases Acids: Bases: Any compound that forms H+ ions in solution. Acidic Solutions contain higher concentrations of H+ ions than pure water and have pH values below 7. Bases: Any compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH- ions) in solution. Basic, or alkaline, solutions contain lower concentrations of H+ than pure water and have pH values above 7.
