LESSON 2: STICK FIGURES Unit 1 HAVE YOUR DATA DIARY OUT TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: HOW MANY OBSERVATIONS DID YOU MAKE? WHERE DO YOU LEAVE THE MOST DATA TRAILS? WHAT COULD SOMEONE POSSIBLY LEARN ABOUT YOU IF THAT PERSON HAD ALL OF THIS DATA? WARM UP

LEARNING OBJECTIVE Students will learn how to observe, record, and organize data through a sorting activity and gallery walk in order to see how data may be organized for particular purposes.

STICK FIGURES ACTIVITY Collect data on a strange group of people who appear to be completely two-dimensional Record as much information about these people as possible Organize your information in any way you choose MATERIALS MANAGER: Pick up 1 stack of cards for your team from Materials Table

ACTIVITY TIMELINE Individually: Come together as a team: select 1 card from your team’s pile of 8 record all possible information in your Data Science (DS) journal Come together as a team: share your individual findings Materials Manager picks up a poster paper and markers On poster paper, organize the data into a visual represent the data from ALL 8 cards

STICK FIGURES GALLERY WALK Materials Manager: returns markers pick up a stack of post-its for your group Student groups will rotate around room to view other teams’ representations Use post-it stickies to write a comment or question add it to the poster to provide feedback

STICK FIGURES DISCUSSION Discuss in your teams - prepare to share: Were the data organized in similar ways? How were the data organized differently between teams? What information was available on each card? Which representations made it easy to see what (or who) were observed? Which made it easy to see whether different stick figures had different characteristics? Which representation makes it easiest to see which stick figure is tallest? If you were handed a blank stick figure and knew only the person’s name, could you fill in the rest of the information? 1 Describe some similarities between the team posters. 2 Describe some differences between the team posters.
