Simplifying Variable Expressions

A term is a number or the product of number and a variable 5x + 2x - 6y - 7 How many terms are in this expression?

How many terms does each expression have? 4 + 6x - 7xy 9 + 4y -8 - x 3r + 7s - 4t + 9

A constant is a term that has no variable. 5x + 2x - 6y - 7

Like terms have identical variables same exponents 5x + 2x - 6y - 7

A coefficient is a number that multiplies a variable. 5x + 2x - 6y - 7

Identifying Coefficients Like terms Constants 1) 4x+3x-9 2) x+7y-3z 3) -3a+4a+9b 4) 5s+8r-2s+7r

Simplify by combining like terms: 1. 5r + 3r 2. 5s – 4s

3. 6x + 4 – 3 4. 4y – 7 + 2

5. 7a + 2b + 15a – 3b 6. 4x + 3 – 10 + 5x

You try! 7. – 8(6 – 2c) + 5 8. 4g + 3(3 – g) 9. 18 + 6(9k – 13) 10. – 3z + 8(z + y)
