1850s: A Crazy Decade

Group Projects: Part 2 GQ#2 - Why did the Compromise of 1850 break down so quickly? GQ#3 - Why did the Republicans win the 1860 presidential election?

Group Project - Expectations Collaborate & participate. Use technology appropriately. Have academic conversations. Work hard & be nice!!!

Group Project Spend a few minutes making sure every member of your group has good information for all parts of your worksheet/chart. Talk through it to ensure that there is a common understanding of the events and their significance to the origins of the Civil War. Consult your resources and fill in blanks as needed.

Complete the chart and explain your thinking. II. Have a discussion with your group about the relative significance of these events in bringing on the Civil War. Which events were most significant & why? Which were not as significant? Why?   Complete the chart and explain your thinking.

III. Discuss with your group and COME UP WITH A PLAN to create some sort of timeline of the 1850s that helps us understand why the Compromise of 1850 broke down so quickly, the rise of the Republican Party in 1860, and the origins of the Civil War. Your group is free to create your timeline in whatever format you choose, as long as it identifies and explains the significance of events, and it clearly indicates which events were the more significant ones – see your rankings. What was the most significant event? What was next? Etc.

Paper 1 Practice – Birth of the Republican Party Part B – What is the assertion? The formation of the Republican Party caused a great threat to the party system. What is the big message of each source? Which sources support the assertion? Which do not? OMCL Which are more reliable? Why?
