Energy and Transformation Bellwork: In which state of matter are the molecules free to move in all directions?

Objectives Identify Potential and Kinetic energy Recognize the various types of energy Recognize how energy moves

Energy Defined- That which makes work occur. Energy makes things move. The scientific definition of work is different from our normal definition. Work only occurs when something MOVES.

Categories of Energy Potential energy- stored energy NOT IN MOTION Ex??? Kinetic Energy- the energy of motion

Types and Transformations Light Energy Sound Energy Electrical energy Chemical Energy Mechanical Heat Energy Nuclear Energy

How does energy travel? Energy can move in three ways, Radiation, Conduction, and Convection Can you describe each one???

Radiation Energy that travels through space in waves. Examples Heat from a fire, light from sun

Conduction Conduction is the transfer of energy when molecules bump into each other. Conduction works when energy transfers to something else when it is in direct contact Example: Think of hot pavement warming your feet. Heat from the pavement moves into your feet through DIRECT contact.

Conduction Transfer of energy by contact. Ex???

Convection Convection is the transfer of energy by a liquid or gas. Energy “catches a ride on it” and moves somewhere else. Think of warm air rising to heat the upstairs of a house.

Writing Prompt Describe what happens to the water molecules of a frozen lake as the sun’s heat warms it above 32 Fahrenheit. Be sure to describe what happens to space between the molecules and the motion of the molecules.
