Who Do You Think James 4:11-12

JAMES 4:11-12 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

Psalm 50:19-20 You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son

Proverbs 10:18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool.

Proverbs 11:13 Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear

Matthew 12:36-37 – I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Slander, Critical Speech, Gossip Evil Speech Slander, Critical Speech, Gossip

SLANDER Making a false statement or misrepresentation about another person that defames or damages the person’s reputation

CRITICAL SPEECH Negative comments about someone that may be actually true but doesn’t need to be said.

GOSSIP Spreading unfavorable information about someone else, even if that information is true.

Dan McCartney Many slanderers probably are unaware that they are spreading falsehood; they believe their negative accusations and censorious remarks to be reasonable well founded, and they may even see themselves as having a special calling to inform the world someone’s evil or to preserve the church’s purity by excising its less-than-perfect members

Alistair Begg Every day, in a thousand ways, we are tempted to make ourselves the center of the universe. One of the ways in which I know I’m the center of the universe is when I think I’m better than everyone else. It helps me to feel much more important when I can pass along a little something that makes someone else look bad"

Matthew 12:34-36 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

Jerry Bridges The sin of Judgmentalism is one of the most subtle of our “respectable” sins because it is often practices under the guise of being zealous for what is right. It’s obvious that within our conservative evangelical circles there are myriads of opinions on everything from theology to conduct to lifestyle and politics…

Jerry Bridges …Not only are there multiple opinions but we usually assume our opinion is correct. That’s where our trouble with judgmentalism begins. We equate our opinions with truth…and then we hide our judgmentalism under the cloak of Christian convictions.

We Judge Sinfully When… We Don’t Have All the Facts We JUDGE Based On Our PERSONAL CONVICTION, rather than CLEAR, BIBLICAL TRUTH We JUDGE Others By a DIFFERENT STANDARD than we JUDGE OURSELVES WE JUDGE MOTIVES, rather than Clear, Verifiable Behavior WE MAGNIFY Others’ Sins While MINIMIZING/IGNORING Our Own…

Romans 2:1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things

James 4:11b The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge

Proverbs 19:11 Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense

Colossians 3:12-13 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

JAMES 4:12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
