There were actually 4 charters Notes Date: 1606 Author: agreement between King James I and the owners of the Virginia Company. Purpose: Gave the company permission to start a colony in America GUARANTEED the colonists rights as English citizens even though they were living in America English citizenship was even given to the children that were born in the colonies The first settlement was Jamestown
