Figure 1 Sleep, chronotype, and shift work. Chronotype (preferred sleeping time indicated by green lines) is driven by an internal clock and varies between extreme early types (top row) and late types (bottom row). Non-traditional shift schedules (gray shaded regions), such as night shift (top right and bottom left) or early morning shift (top left and bottom right) can result in circadian misalignment (right column) when the required working time coincides with a significant portion of the preferred sleep time of an individual. This circadian misalignment may mediate the numerous health risks associated with shift work. (Work schedules and sleep times are based on [1].)
