Chapter 2 - Working with Real Numbers Algebra Class Periods 2 ,3, and 5 Tuesday 09-30-08 Chapter 2 - Working with Real Numbers Lesson Title: Ch. 2.6 Rules for Multiplication (pgs.70-74) Objective: To use rules and properties to find the products of real numbers.. CA Standards: 1, 4, 25, 25.1

Lesson Background: Students often confuse the new rules for multiplication with the rules for addition. Many students who would have added -5 and -3 correctly before might now say that “(-5) + (-3) is 8” because “two minuses make a plus.” … It is important to require students to use precise language as in the following. The product of two negative numbers is positive. 2. The sum of two negative numbers is a negative. 3. The product of a positive and a negative number is negative. 4. The sum of a positive and a negative number may be either positive or negative.
