IBMYP Personal Project Ellie Harper, IB Coordinator Julia Cuccherini & Ellie Kurth, Personal Project Coordinators

What is the PP? A student-centered exploration and culminating component of the MYP Introduced in spring of MYP Year 4, completion of project over the summer, paper written in the fall of MYP Year 5. Final report due in December. Global Contexts provide the focus. Topic should reflect interests and passions of student Presented in Seminar and supported through English 9&10. Proposal must be approved before students can begin (Due April 10)

3 Components Process journal—document of the process, must show regular use Outcome/product—media can vary Report—written format, 1500-3500 words

Aims participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time communicate effectively in a variety of situations demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

Communication & Support Seminar: brainstorming, explanation of requirements, rubrics, distribution of packet English 9 & 10: support and provide feedback on each step of the process, proposal review, HCPS grade assigned for the completion of the steps Supervisor

Role of the Supervisor Must be familiar with the guide and understand their role; should be on campus and will receive supervisor training Students choose their supervisor. It is not necessary to be an expert in the field. Maintain contact, respond to student emails/phone calls. Communication should be student initiated Provide support with objectivity, can give advice, but ultimate decision is with the student No editing work

Past topics Acquiring of a new skill: surfing, public speaking, sign language, traditional instrument, screenplay writing, welding, stock trading, SCUBA certification Organizing a photography exhibit of own photos at a local gallery Classic car restoration Building a musical instrument Auctioning off personal artwork to raise money for pediatric cancer (as part of an existing silent auction). Put on a performance (play, concert etc.) to bring the community together or to raise awareness for a cause Writing a collection of poetry Writing a business plan

Miscellaneous PP can not be connected to the curriculum for any subject Group work is possible, but assessed individually Showcase in February Core component of the MYP, without it can’t earn certificate. Also must complete in order to continue to DP Scale is 1-7; Must earn a 3 or higher in order to “pass” Will score projects with reps from other IB sites Send samples for moderation

How can parents support their student? Discuss possible topics with your student Know the final selected topic Be aware of the due dates through English class Check in on progress Read the process journal and report Attend the February 2020 Showcase
