weather and climate With lots of sunshine, warm seas, refreshing sea breezes and a warm climate all year round, Tropical North Queensland weather would be very hard to top.You can swim in Tropical North Queensland beaches all year round. The normal swimming season runs between April and October. Between November and March Tropical North Queensland is home to the box jellyfish, so special swimming enclosures are erected at popular beaches to protect swimmers. Seawater temperatures range from 23 degrees Celsius in July to 29 degrees Celsius in February.

clownfish The clown fish which can also be known as the anemonefish, its a small species of fish that are found around tropical coral reefs eg The Great Barrier. There are 28 species of clownfish. They are orange, yellow, maroon and many other colors. The most common clownfish - and the one that looks most like Nemo - is the percula clown fish which is bright orange with white stripes. Clown fish are between two and five inches long.

anemone The beautiful coloured sea anemone is named after the equally flashy terrestrial anemone flower. A close relative of coral and jellyfish, anemones are stinging polyps that spend most of their time attached to rocks on the sea bottom or on coral reefs waiting for fish to pass close enough to get ensnared in their venom-filled tentacles.

natural disaster The northern end of the 2600 km Great Barrier Reef was right in the path of Cyclone Yasi. The Reef is made of 2900 individual reefs. It stretches over an area of 344,000 square kilometres. The instant effect is that it would have physical damage to the reef. Coral, such as Straghorns, gets destroyed by storms whereas the slow growing coral, such as Brain Coral, is generally spared by the physical effects of storms. Other effects are floods that leave waste and mess everywhere flows into the reef and kills the coral. The coral can get messed up, moved or killed.
