Tides Study Pack #9

Today’s Goal! I can explain what causes tides. I can compare spring and neap tides.

What is a tide? Regular rise and fall of the water level along a shore High tide Low tide While one side of the earth is experiencing high tide, the other is experience low tide Caused by pull between earth and moon

Tides and the Moon Moon’s gravitational pull causes water to bulge on one side of the earth facing the moon and opposite the moon causing high tide Water is drawn away from the other two sides causing low tide The difference between high tide and low tide is called the tidal range

Tides and the Moon At certain times in the year, the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth cause spring tides and neap tides

Spring Tide High tides are HIGHER than usual Low tides are LOWER than usual Occurs at new moon and full moon

Neap Tide High tides are LOWER than usual Low tides are HIGHER than usual Occurs at first quarter and third quarter
