Ostashkov is a city in the Tver Oblast, Russia, 199 km west of Tver Ostashkov is a city in the Tver Oblast, Russia, 199 km west of Tver. It sits on a peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Seliger, one of the purest lakes in Europe [Population: 19,700 (2006 est); 20,660 (2002 Census).       The island of Klichen was mentioned for the first time in a letter sent by the Grand Duke Algirdas of Lithuania to the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1371. After the island was sacked by Novgorod pirates several years later, two of the surviving inhabitants Klichen, the Ostashko and Timofey, moved to the mainland, where they founded the villages Ostashkovo and Timofeevo, respectively .. The first belonged to the Patriarchs of Moscow, and the second - the Monastery of Volokolamsk Joseph. In 1770, both towns merged in the city of Ostashkov. . Ostashkov is commonly considered as one of the best cities in Russia of the province. Its main streets were exposed in neoclassical style, after the plans of Ivan Starov (1772). Local attractions include the Ascension Church (1689), the Trinity Cathedral (1697), the Monastery of the Sign (1673, 1730, 1880), and the mid-18th century Zhitnyi Cloister. There is also a fantasy column built by the people of Ostashkov in 1787 to mark a point where a wooden fort (1587) stood. The pleasant architecture of the city and attractive surroundings of the lake combine to make Ostashkov one of the most popular tourist destinations in Western Russia
