Anxiety: Viewpoint Writing How might the characters in Purple Hibiscus feel anxious? Who knows about Freud? Who has heard of a Freudian slip? Context information about Freud: Read the article on anxiety. Summarise what anxiety is. Summarise what the common defence mechanisms are Describe how knowing the common defence mechanisms can help you cope with anxiety Sigmund Freud Key ideas: Freud’s theory of Psychoanalysis suggests that the human psyche (personality) has three parts. The id is with us from birth. This part wishes to satisfy every urge it has immediately, regardless of the consequences. This is why babies cry to be fed, will snatch toys etc. The ego develops next. It is the decision-making part of our psyche and works by reason and strategy. The superego develops last. It reflects the values and morals of society which are learned from our parents and others. It is our conscience and means that we experience guilt. Key vocabulary conscience ego Freudian id infantile morals psyche reason strategy superego values Viewpoint Task: “Anxiety is a modern issue. Once we understand common defence mechanisms we can self-regulate this more effectively” Write a speech about the topic of anxiety.

Decide your three reasons for or against the statement. Plan using: Reasons (Why do you think this?) Response (What do you think should happen?) Result (How this will resolve the issue?) Some ideas that you can use to help you write your viewpoint: You can use these points anywhere and you can repeat them if you want to. State your viewpoint – reword the statement into your opinion Use a rhetorical question and repeat it in the conclusion Include reasons, response and results in every paragraph (expect the conclusion) Include a statistic and a list of information to build on your opinion Create an anecdote that shows an experience or story that you have heard about (the impact on people’s lives would work) Ensure you state what you want to happen as a result of your letter Describe a solution to the problem Conclude with your recommendation to solve the issue Viewpoint Task: “Anxiety is a modern issue. Once we understand common defence mechanisms we can self-regulate this more effectively” Write a speech about the topic of anxiety.
