An innovative European technical university Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution: More than 13,000 full-time students (one-third women). Close to 1,800 research students (one- third women). Around 3,500 full-time positions (one- third women). Four campuses in the Stockholm region, in close connection to innovation clusters. KTH is Sweden’s largest and oldest technical research and learning institution: Founded in 1827 King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, is the university's patron More than 13,000 full-time students (one-third women) Close to 1,800 research students (one-third women) Around 3,500 full-time positions (one-third are women) KTH has four campuses in the Stockholm region, each with its own distinctive character and profile. They facilitate in-depth studies and collaborate with the private and public sectors. Södertälje Flemingsberg Kista Stockholm City (Picture: KTH Campus in Stockholm City.) www.kth.se

Research and education for a brighter tomorrow KTH rests on three pillars: sustainability, equality and internationalization. We are working proactively for a more sustainable future. For us, gender balance is about equality, as well as quality of learning, research and results. We are home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world - all dedicated to advancing knowledge. KTH rests on three pillars; sustainability, equality and internationalisation. - As a technical university we play a role in driving forward developments towards a more sustainable future. - Gender balance is not just about equality, it’s also about quality of learning, research and results. - Internationalisation is an essential tool in becoming a world-leading technical institution. We are home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world - all dedicated to advancing knowledge. Sigbritt Karlsson, 19th President of KTH. The president took office on November 12th, 2016. She has a Ph.D. in polymer technology from KTH, and is professor of polymer technology, targeting the technical environments of polymeric materials. The following degrees are awarded at KTH: Bachelor of Science in Engineering Master of Science in Engineering Master of Architecture Master of Science in Engineering and Education Licentiate Ph.D. We have over 60 Master’s programmes in nine fields: Architecture and Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering Engineering Physics and Mathematics Energy and Sustainable Development Industrial Management and Innovation Information and communication Technology Life Science Technology Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Materials Science and Engineering Mechanical Engineering. Programmes have strong links with research and industry; Project work, assignments and degree projects are often produced at or in collaboration with companies. Many of KTH's departments have their own industrial councils. Through these councils, companies can influence the content of the study programmes and ensure that they maintain high quality with close connections to the needs and expertise of industry. www.kth.se

KTH Library

KTH Library 50 Staff Mainly based at KTH Campus + three small units Four organisational units Library services and Learning support Media and IT Publishing infrastructure Support staff From 1 January 2018 – Part of the University Administration Before part of an academic unit – school (Library, e-learning, Teaching and Learning in higher education and Teacher training programmes)

Development plan (focus for the library 2018-2023) Tre main areas (What we will do) Access to information Support to education Support to research How we will reach there Organisational culture User-centred service design Collaboration Telling the story of what the library is to day Tillhandahålla vetenskaplig information till KTH:s forskning och undervisning och utveckla användarcentrerade gränssnitt för underlätta möjligheten att hitta relevant information.

Access to information – over 95 of our materials are today digital Providing the scientific information KTH's research and teaching needs and develops tools that facilitate the ability to find and process it. Provide the skills that students and researchers need to navigate in the complex information landscape

Support students in their Learning process and develop an innovative learning – and study environment that combines silent reading spaces, collaboration areas and areas for experimental learning (maker spaces, digital labs). Meeting place - Exhibitions of KTH research and popular science lectures

We want to be a hub for academic and digital literacy We want to be a hub for academic and digital literacy. We want to work integrated in the educational and research process at KTH Teaching in different educational programs Support an tutorial sessions Language lab Academic resource centre – with lectures in all from career coaching, how to improve your study skills, information retrieval etc.

Develop services that support the various parts of the research process (from publication support, support for research data, visualization and text and data mining)

Collaborate with students, faculty and support staff Communicate – tell the story of the library

What can we (a library) do to support education at KTH?

4 skills needed from an engineering student at KTH ?

What are the challenges for Swedish research libraries?

7 perspectives The library world is divided Increased distance between research and the library Digitalisation does not (immediately) lower the costs Closed access publishing restricts knowledge access Media costs increase Increased need for national repositories /archives The physical library’s worth for studies and research may be underestimated

What are the roads to success for a research library?

7 visions of a library future The library as a lab The research support unit to be converted to ”Publication process unit support” Building an ”e-Research alliance” with Archive, Registrar, IT-staff, etc. http://www.eresearch.uni-goettingen.de/ Networking with regional (innovation) environments Support and promote junior researchers Increased cooperation with other support functions at the universities G Library 2.0

7 KTH Library activities in the future The KTH Library Lab: https://christianlauersen.net/ The KTH Library as a tool for democracy The KTH Library as a multi-functional space for learning The KTH Library being beside the researcher from day 1 The KTH Library diversifies The KTH Library follows the steps of the best researchers (as said at Caltech), not all researchers. The KTH Library skills needed: Coding and communication. Disseminating and discussing

Then: What are librarian skills needed in the future?

Librarians of the future Three general competency profiles ”personas” (as described by the KTH Library Director Maria Haglund): The Doer The Nerd The Communicator These personas are formed as a consequence of different drivers for education change:

Drivers for higher education change Costs Financial and funding support Globalization of human activities Information explosion 21st Century core capabilities Technology Employment sector transformations Student demographics Inter-institutional competition Quality of instruction Demands for accountability Dr. Marti Cleveland-Innes

3 personas The Doer – delivers stuff The Nerd – creates new stuff The Communicator – relates to stuff In general we do not need best practices.

3 personas The Doer – delivers stuff The Nerd – creates new stuff The Communicator – relates to stuff In general we do not need best practices. Instead we need better practices, since best practices rules out learning!

Time for discussion!
