Net Force Power Up What are balanced forces? What is an example of balanced forces? What are unbalanced forces? What is an example of an unbalanced force?

Net Force= Sum of all forces acting on an object. If the Net Force is 0, then the object remains stationary or has a constant velocity. If the Net force is greater or less than 0, the object will be accelerating or decelerating.

Energy Notes

Change Requires Energy The Nature of Energy 1 Change Requires Energy When something is able to change its environment or itself, it has energy. Energy is the ability to cause change or do work. It is measured in Joules (J) Energy has several different forms—electrical, mechanical, chemical, radiant, and thermal

The Nature of Energy 1 Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is the energy a moving object has because of its motion. The kinetic energy of a moving object depends on the object’s mass and its speed.

The Nature of Energy 1 Potential Energy Stored energy due to position is called potential energy. There are three kinds of potential energy Elastic potential energy is energy stored by something that can stretch or compress, such as a rubber band or spring.

Chemical Potential Energy The Nature of Energy 1 Chemical Potential Energy Energy stored in chemical bonds is chemical potential energy.

Gravitational Potential Energy The Nature of Energy 1 Gravitational Potential Energy Anything that can fall has stored energy called gravitational potential energy. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is energy stored by objects due to their position above Earth’s surface. On Earth the acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2, and has the symbol g.

Conversions Between Kinetic and Potential Energy As an object moves, potential energy can be converted to kinetic energy in a cyclic or repeating pattern. This is particularly visible in a pendulum

Conversions Between Kinetic and Potential Energy Conservation of Energy 2 Conversions Between Kinetic and Potential Energy Mechanical energy is the total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy

The Law of Conservation of Energy 2 The Law of Conservation of Energy Law of Conservation of Energy - energy can change from one form to another, but the total amount of energy never changes.

Changing Forms of Energy Conservation of Energy 2 Changing Forms of Energy Energy Conversions involve energy changing from one form to another form.

Kinetic and Potential Energy Power Up 1. If a 10 kg weight is raised to a height of 15 meters, what is its GPE? 2. If the velocity of the 10 kg weight is 17.155 m/s right before it hits the ground, what is its kinetic energy?

Kinetic and Potential Energy Power Up 1. 1471.5 J= GPE 2. 1471.5 J= KE 3. Why are they the same?
