MOSES SAWER NANOR FROM GHANA ACTION PLAN MOSES SAWER NANOR FROM GHANA

What to be done Extending social security cover and workman compensation for construction workers.

Why it has to be done In the transformation agenda of the government of Ghana, infrastructure development is key. However, workers on the infrastructure project are barely covered by any social security program or workman compensation especially the site workers. This workers deserve some protection and insurance for the risk they take at the various project site.

How to do it At the tripartite level, the TUC will engage government and employers on to make it a requirement for companies biding for government contract to provide workman compensation plans and pay social security for site staff of the project. At the bipartite level, engage management of the various construction companies through collective bargaining to provide social security and workman compensation for their staff. Engage insurance companies to develop customized workman compensation plans for the construction sector that will pay higher benefits in case of any injury.

Purpose of Action To get our members in the construction sector covered by social security and workman compensation.

For Whom For the benefit of workers in the construction sector of the economy. This is the reduce the risk and difficulties they face after their engagement and post employment in the construction sector.

With Whom TUC will implement this together with its affiliates in the construction sector (Construction and Building Materials Workers Union).

With What It is projected to cost about GHC100,000 to implement this action. It will be jointly funded by the TUC and it affiliate in the construction sector and where necessary, we will contact our local and international partners for funds.

Where The target is to cover the entire country in the long run. However, we will start with the major construction firms in Ghana and extend it to the medium and small scale construction firms

When Will start the engagement with government and the main opposition political parties this year. This is to afford the TUC the opportunity to get the political parties to include it as part of the agenda in their respective manifesto for the 2020 elections.

How it will work TUC will evaluate the response and action of government and other pollical parties to ensure agreement reached are captured in policy documents Jointly monitor with affiliates in the construction sector if companies are paying social security and providing workman compensation for our members Monitor benefits level being provided by insurance companies to ensure is adequate for injuries that may be suffered.
