Geography and Life in Arabia (pg. 54-58) What was it a crossroads between, and why was that useful? What is the terrain mostly like? What is an oasis and why were they important? What other physical features are there? What is the climate like? Describe the nomadic way of life. Describe the sedentary(townspeople) way of life. What is a souk & what was it used for?

Crossroads Intersection of Africa, Asia & Europe Trade on land, along coasts, across Seas Introduced new products & ideas

Terrain Huge & vast sand dunes!

Oasis Wet, fertile area in desert Gave water Key stops on trade routes

Other features Mountains on south & west Marshy lands near Persian gulf

Climate Hot & dry!

Nomads Lived in tents Raised herds of sheep, goats, camels (camels give milk & transportation) Traveled across desert Camels & tents belong to individuals Water & grazing belong to tribe Tribe gave protection

Sedentary Settled in oasis so they could farm Trading communities Worked with caravans (groups of traders who traveled together)

Souk Town market or bazaar Trade for nomads & townspeople
