In the 1920s, was the main effect of the economic boom on US society the development of a car-owning culture? [20 marks] LOs: 1. To recall, explain and categorise examples of effects of the 1920s ‘boom’ on the standard of living. 2. To identify the features and structure of a Level 5 section A essay question response in Paper 1. 3. To ensure we are familiar with the materials we need to complete an exam response. Task one: Skim-read the ‘chapter summary’. This is everything we’ve learned in the last 6 weeks. If this is the type of essay question we’ll be asked, predict potential problems in the long term.

Task two: Recap and consolidating notes. Sort the examples into evidence of either/both: Reasons for and evidence of the ‘boom’ Reasons for and evidence of ‘bust’. Some will be evidence of both! 2) Then identify at least 4 overall effects of the ‘boom’ on the standard of living (categories / groups of examples) Start to make a list of possible factors. What were the causes of the boom? Industrial production and increased personal income = Investing in the booming stock market (Wall Street) Consumerism - Increased wages, mass production, reducing costs and therefore making items more affordable. Credit system also enabled consumerism. Labour-saving technology (electricity, washing machines, vacuums, toasters, dishwashers etc) increased time and money for leisure, leading to the expansion of the leisure industries, car travel, spectator sports and even aviation. Plan your introduction. Task three: Breaking down the question. Read pages 11-13 and 15 of your course guide. This essay is from Section A. Why are these types of essay (causation, factor-based essays) relatively accessible to us? Now re-read page 14. Use ‘tip 1’ to annotate your question sheet. Box/highlight/underline: Topic focus (the topic of the question) Conceptual focus (the 2nd order historical concept of the question) Chronological focus (the time period of the question) Adjectival/adverbial qualifier: these are specific words in the question and they expect you to respond to and challenge. i.e. if they use the word ‘transformed’ or ask about ‘fundamental features’ of an era (rather than ‘features’), address the precise meaning of this word in your introduction, challenge it based on what you know and come up with a better word instead that fits your judgement. Challenge: Plan your introduction.

Task four: What does a level 5 essay look like? Read the example exam response on pages 16-21 of your course guide. This is for a different question (obviously not your question, otherwise you’d all just copy it and not do the planning for yourself!). Label 3 things they have addressed in the introduction. Find where the students has made a really clear link on page 17. Why is it easy to find? What words have they used to show extent? Challenge: What do you NOT like about the style of this essay? Conceptually, it’s brilliant, but there are some classic stylistic ‘Y12’ traits.
