What do colleges look for? Grades, gpa is determined at the end of junior year, grades 10-11 Sat/act scores Rigor, have you challenged yourself with honors/ap classes? Personal statements Leadership, work, awards No d’s/f’s senior year, students can be rescinded after being accepted!

College options Junior College/community college - 113 campuses in CA California State University - 23 campuses University of California - 9 campuses Private universities Out of state colleges and universities Trade/vocational schools Military – access to college and military academies

Community or junior college MJC – most popular for student to attend after graduating from beyer. AA/AS degrees and certificate programs Transfer program to uc/csu – TAG agreement with guaranteed transfer to 6 UC and many CSU campuses. Excludes Berkeley, San Diego, LA New – CA Promise Grant – 2 years tuition free Apply to MJC and complete CORE steps Complete FAFSA or CA Dream act Be enrolled full time (12 units or more) We recommend students take an MJC class spring of senior year for free! Guidance 101 this will help you have the best chance of enrolling in classes No sat or act tests required Do not have to meet a-g requirements

MJC Classes for high school students MJC classes are free for all high school students grades 9-12 You must see Ms. Crawford, counselor, I wing, to get permission 2 classes currently offered at Beyer: Guidance 110 and healthful living

California state university 23 campuses $70 per campus to apply – one application BA/BS Degrees in business, teaching, nursing, etc. Estimated cost: $22,000/year Opens Oct. 1, deadline Nov. 30

University of california 9 campuses BA/BS degrees – more research oriented. Biomedical engineering, economics, etc. Sat subject tests are optional. Recommended for math and science majors. Check by campus. Requires personal insight questions $70 per campus – one application Estimated cost: $35,000/year

Email account for college Set up new email account that is for college and scholarships only Include your name in the email, i.e. bettybeyer@gmail.com Check your email often to see if colleges are requesting more information from you Critical that you respond immediately to all college requests! After you apply, colleges will send you an email to set up portals where they will send you important information. Check often!

Personal statements! Csu: none required Uc: 4-350 word personal insight questions required, choose from 8 prompts Common app: 1-650 word statement, plus individual supplements for each college

Tips for statements Not essays! Personal statements that tell about you Use “I” statements, tell about yourself/experiences that show love of learning/challenges Include examples that show your character, courage, responsibility, drive Plan ahead, do not wait until last minute to write, you will edit! Answer the prompt

Letters of recommendation Choose a teacher from core subjects who knows you well Typically 1-2 letters required for private colleges No letters required or accepted by csu and uc Give teachers plenty of notice Provide a resume/worksheet (Mrs. Duran has worksheets) Deadlines for requesting letters from counselors: October 11 for early decision, early action, November 1 regular application

Sat and act tests SAT ACT UC takes best score in one sitting, CSU will take superscore – highest in each section Subject tests are optional, check each UC/Private campus Send scores to one UC and they are forwarded to rest CSU send to one csu and they are forwarded to rest December deadline ACT CSU/Private will combine scores UC must include writing portion of the test CSU writing optional Send scores to one UC, they are forwarded to rest CSU send scores individually to each campus December deadline It’s a good idea to take both tests. Fee waivers are available for qualifying students. Register online and send 4 score reports to colleges for free. Do not need for MJC.

How to have transcripts sent Fill out transcript request form with mrs. Kauffman Her office is at the end of the hall opposite attendance Please give plenty of time when making requests No charge for current students

College visits You are allowed 3 days of excused absences for college visits during senior year. Let them know in the supervision office. Bring back something showing you went! Different college reps will be visiting our campus. Come learn more about those colleges. You might learn about college you had no idea about! Check naviance and the bulletin for dates and times. sign up through Naviance account. Make sure you clear this with your teachers.

College athletics - NCAA https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/ - must register Division I or II school Core requirements -16 core classes with a 2.5 gpa Sliding scale for SAT/Act test scores and GPA in 16 core classes Apply online, download form, turn in to Mrs. Kauffman for transcript to be sent Report SAT/ACT scores! 9999
