Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929.

When Martin was born, the south was segregated When Martin was born, the south was segregated. There were places he was not allowed to go.

He could only drink from black only water fountains.

He could only go to black only schools.

This made him feel sad.

When Martin grew up, he became a preacher and earned a Dr When Martin grew up, he became a preacher and earned a Dr. in Philosophy.

Dr. King saw a way to bring all people together with love instead of keeping people divided with hate.

Dr. King told people to stand together in peace and not follow unfair laws.

When Dr. King his followers protested peacefully, the police tried to stop them with violence.

Dr. King said, LOVE not hate. PEACE not violence.

When black students tried to enroll in white schools, they were protested with violence.

Dr. King said, LOVE not hate. PEACE not violence.

When Dr. King and his followers rode the bus or sat at the whites only counter, they were arrested.

On August 28, 1963 Dr. King told his followers that he had a Dream.

He dreamed of a day when all people could live together in peace.

He dreamed of a day when he and his followers would be really free.

He dreamed of a day when his child would be able to play freely with white children.

Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize for trying to peacefully end segregation.

Dr. King continued to tell people to fight with peace and love, not violence until he was killed on April 4, 1968.

Dr. King’s dream of peace and equality lives on today.
