Shared Reading Strategy Presented By: Dan Crytser ED 645-Advanced Methods in PK-12 School Literacy

Introduction Developed by Donald Holdaway in 1979 Based on research that story book reading is critical in children’s reading development Model allows groups of children to experience many benefits that are part of story book reading

Rich, authentic literature can be used for Word Identification skills Teacher models reading to the children Opportunities for concept and language expansion Awareness of the functions of print, familiarity with language pattern, and word recognition skills All student needs are met

Step 1: Introduction Reading the Title Reading the Author’s Name Pre-questions to Activate Student’s Prior Knowledge Having Student’s Make Predictions, etc.

Step 2: Repeated Readings of The Text Teacher reads the text first; pointing to each word Students join in; in subsequent readings Reading continues (reading in pairs, by rows) When text/poem is familiar, have students take turns reading
