Trauma Data Elements Recommended by RSWG for Inclusion into the Texas Trauma Registry Stakeholder Webinar

Webinar Objectives Present lists of data elements for EMS and hospital reporting as recommended by RSWG Describe characteristics of the lists of data elements Obtain input on the data elements from stakeholders who treat and/or transport injured patients

Stakeholder Input Are there additional data elements not listed that you would recommend for consideration? Are there data elements in the list, that from your experience, are not available in your EMS or hospital patient records, and therefore are unable to be reported?

RSWG Recommendations for Hospital Data Elements RSWG Recommends 82 NTDB data Elements RSWG Recommends 18 unique Trauma Registry data elements (not in NTDB) RSWG Recommends a total of 100 Hospital data elements The current Trauma Registry collects 182 Hospital data elements

NTDB Hospital Data Elements There are 82 NTDB data elements 77 are NTDB National data elements 5 are NTDB optional and pertain to injury severity

NTDB Hospital Data Elements Compared to Current Trauma Registry Data Elements 22 data elements are unique to NTDB, there is not a current TR data element that matches it 18 of the recommended data elements are unique to the TR, there is not a NTDB data element that matches it

Unique Trauma Registry Elements for Hospitals 4 of the 18 unique elements are ID numbers for the TR, data set, medical record and facility 2 are discharge data (e.g. condition on discharge) 2 are charges and reimbursement 5 are related to multiple hospitals (e.g. date of arrival to first hospital) 5 are alcohol level, trauma team activation, and airway management

Hospital Performance Improvement Data Elements The RSWG is currently working with stakeholders from Hospitals designated as Level III or IV to obtain their input on the recommended performance improvement data elements There are 43 performance improvement data elements currently available in the Trauma Registry

NEMSIS EMS Data Elements NEMSIS categorizes data as mandated, required or optional NEMSIS consists of 538 total data elements 45 Mandated 188 Required 305 Optional What is NEMSIS? National EMS Information System National Standard Intended to help unify EMS data Goals Improve analysis of EMS procedures and patient care Compare data across state boundaries (benchmarking) Better evaluate the EMS role in health care

RSWG Recommendations for NEMSIS Data Elements RSWG recommends 168 NEMSIS data elements 45 Mandated 104 Required 19 Optional

RSWG Recommendations for EMS Data Elements RSWG Recommends 168 NEMSIS data Elements RSWG Recommends 16 unique Trauma Registry data elements (not in NEMSIS) RSWG Recommends a total of 184 EMS data elements The current Trauma Registry collects 126 EMS data elements

Unique Trauma Registry Elements for EMS: RSWG Recommends 16 Data Elements 3 diversion data elements (e.g. facility diverted from) 2 trauma system data elements (e.g. trauma criteria) 1 air EMS 1 mutual aid 1 burn percentage 2 ID numbers (facility Etc.) 2 injury date and time 1 ethnicity 2 pulse and respiration rate at destination 1 place of injury

NEMSIS Data Elements One Time and Conditional Data Elements 35 NEMSIS mandated elements are agency information and need be reported once and thereafter updated 15 data elements pertain to cardiac arrest and therefore are only answered for this condition Total 184 minus 50 elements equals 134 and the current TR collects 126

RSWG Future Data Element Considerations Performance Improvement Data Elements for Trauma System and Patient Outcomes Submersion Data Elements Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Data Elements

RSWG Stakeholder Involvement RSWG will recruit stakeholders to participate in the future data elements considerations Submersion Traumatic Brain Injury & Spinal Cord Injury

Future Webinars DSHS will continue to conduct webinars for Submersion Data Elements Traumatic Brain Injury & Spinal Cord Injury Data Elements Updates on Trauma Registry Charter to build a new registry Vendor and Software Developers

Conclusion The questions and answers from this webinar will be posted to our website: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/injury/default.shtm We are also developing a survey to place on our website to collect additional questions and comments Thank You for your participation in this Webinar!
