Scoring Directions Look closely at Deadlines! Scored by CRA Contracts, Title, Observation, Justification/Background Research, Research Question, Variables, Hypotheses, Procedures A, & References will be scored by CRA for a total of 42 points. To pass you will need to receive at least 34 out of 42 points AND have been approved. Scored by Symposium Judge Procedure B, Results, Data Analysis, Conclusion, & Presentation Skills will be scored at Symposium for a total of 24 points. Project Title 3 points--scored by CRA Should condense the project’s content into a complete statement and/or question. No spelling errors No abbreviations No technical jargon Matches your Research Question. Clearly defines the purpose of your project. This slide should also contain: Your/Group Names School Name Region HSTA Teacher Name

Observation 3 points--scored by CRA Problem is clearly stated on the observation slide. Explains why this project is important to the community and you. Includes a short summary of the project including project type (prevalence, intervention, human experiment, or non-human experiment). Tips What is the problem you are trying to address? Why is this a problem? Why is this problem important to you? Tell us about your idea for a project and how it connects to the problem statement? Your project idea should set out to solve or better understand the problem. Why is your topic important to your community? How will this project idea help improve your community?

Justification/Background Research 7 Points--scored by CRA Background information is related to the research question. This section should be 2 or more slides. Is referenced using correct in-text APA citations from 4 sources. Information is cited from at least 2 academic sources (government agencies, google scholar, other databases). Has at least two facts from each source, for a total of at least 8 facts. Is highlighted in bulleted format. Research Question 3 points--scored by CRA Your question must be focused and specific. Your question must be researchable. Your question must be able to be measured with a statistical test.

Variables 4 points--scored by CRA Correct Independent variable Correct Dependent variable Correct Control (if you don’t have a control, say no control) Correct Constant variables List a least 3

Hypothesis 4 points--scored by CRA Based on research question and variables Testable by a statistical test. Use background information to help explain your hypothesis. Null Hypothesis stated correctly.

Procedures A 11 points--scored by CRA Prevalence Intervention Human Experiment Experiment Procedures were numbered Procedures identified all safety precautions (including how participants' identity will be kept confidential) Procedures identified all safety precautions (including how participants' identity would be kept confidential) Procedures identified all safety precautions Procedures explained who the study population was Procedures explained what plant, natural resource, invertebrate (other) the project was experimenting with Procedures explained what the study population did Procedures explained details of the of the intervention Procedures explained details of the experimental environment and/or change in environment (if you have more than one experimental group explain differences among all groups\ Procedures explained how at least 100 participants were recruited Procedures explained how at least 30 participants were recruited Procedures explained how at least 30 participants were recruited for EACH group (experimental and control) Procedures included a control group Procedures included a copy of the measurement tools (Example: Survey/observation sheet) Procedures included a copy of the pre and post measurement tools (Example: Survey/observation sheet) Procedures included a list of materials Procedures included a participant cover letter explaining the project Procedures explained that there were at least 5 replications per experimental group Procedures included a data collection sheet Procedures explained how data was collected Procedures explained how pre and post data was collected Procedures included how data will be analyzed Procedures included how data would be analyzed  Procedures provided a clear description of the project Procedures provided a clear description of the project

Procedures B 2 points--scored by Symposium judges Procedures are written in paste tense, since you have already finished the project. Use pictures to show what you did for your project (display pictures of your lab equipment, test subjects, your presentation, your intervention, activities used, etc.)

Results 6 points--scored by Symposium judges Raw data is displayed in a chart Results include descriptive statistics (averages, percentages, etc.) Results include graphs that are properly labeled (title, key, x-axis, y-axis). Graphs/charts were explained well. Correct number of participants/replications Prevalence – 100 participants Intervention – 30 participants (pre/post) Human subjects – 30 participants in each group (control and experimental) Experiment – at least 5 replications in each group (control and experimental) Results displayed data that matched the research question

Data Analysis 4 points--scored by Symposium judges Includes a statistical test used to test the hypothesis. Includes an explanation of why that statistical test was used. Includes a P-value. Includes an explanation of the statistical significance of the statistical test used.

Conclusion 5 points--scored by Symposium judges Include a brief summary of the project. Interpret the data and state if the data supported/rejected the hypothesis. Tell if the conclusion answered the research question. Discusses limitations of project The limitations of the study are those characteristics of design or methodology that impacted or influenced the application or interpretation of the results of your study. They are the constraints on generalizability and utility of findings that are the result of the ways in which you chose to design the study and/or the method used to establish internal and external validity. Keep in mind that acknowledgement of a study's limitations is an opportunity to make suggestions for further research. Discuss how you would implement change and/or bring awareness to your community.
