Genetics terms (Gene-Allele)

Gene A section of DNA that codes for traits Ex: eye color, hair color, etc…

Meiosis Form of nuclear division that divides a diploid cell into haploid cells; forms gametes for sexual reproduction

Crossing Over Exchange of chromosome segments between homologous chromosomes during meiosis 1

Haploid (n) Cells have only one copy of each chromosome

Diploid (2n) Cells have two copies of each chromosome: one copy from mom and one from dad

Karyotype Image of all chromosomes in a cell

Pedigree Chart of the phenotype and genotypes in a family that is used to determine whether an individual is a carrier of a recessive allele

DNA Fingerprinting The analysis of DNA from samples of the body conducted in order to identify individuals.
