Curriculum Night 2019-2020 Mrs. Nunley #210

Summit Hill School District 161 is now providing an accelerated curriculum option in Mathematics and English Language Arts in grades 5-8. This program is as inclusive as possible to increase the overall percentage of students exposed to advanced content and academic rigor by the time they complete eighth grade. We strive to provide flexible and innovative teaching and learning environments where students have the opportunity to probe deeper into the content of the curriculum, experience different processes of learning, and create projects to encourage exploration and experimentation at appropriate levels.

Advanced ELA: „Goal: Increase academic rigor as students transition into English 1 or Honors English 1 in high school. The writing and grammar expectations increase in this course! „Grade-level standards will be followed with the addition of a 4th quarter culminating project called a Passion Project. This may become a text extension or writing project linked to a higher Depth of Knowledge level. Students will present their projects at the conclusion of this unit. Some steps will take place within the classroom, while others will take place at home. Additional details about the Passion Project will be shared throughout the year.

Homework Policy: Assignments that are brought home for completion are usually class work assignments that are not finished during the school day. If an assignment is not completed by the following school day (or its due date), it will be considered “late.” Once a student has 5 COMBINED late assignments, they are required to attend Study Hall during lunch/intramurals per the HW policy. A notice of the missing/late assignment will be sent home for a parent/guardian signature. The signed notice, along with the completed assignment, will be due the next day. Failure to do so, will result in a 50% for the missing assignment. Your child is responsible for writing daily work in their assignment notebooks! If an assignment is not completed due to a family emergency, please send me a note/email stating so; if a pattern develops a conference will be needed.

District Grading Scale: B 80 - 89 C 70 - 79 D 60 - 69 F 50 - 59 Formatives = 25% of final grade Summatives = 75% of

Reassessment Policy: Students who receive a D or an F will have an opportunity to retake the failed summative. Students that receive an A, B, or C may request to retake a summative assessment. This request must be made within a week of the summative assessment being posted in PowerSchool. Keep in mind that students that opt to retake a summative assessment may only do so once per subject per quarter and the second grade will be the one recorded in PowerSchool. Students must meet with the teacher to discuss the assessment and students will need to complete the following steps for reassessment to be given: Reassessment form filled out and additional work/studying to be completed. This form requires a parent signature! The request to re-test form and evidence must be completed and returned on the date of the reassessment. Students that do not complete all requirements, will not be allowed to retake the summative assessment.

Attendance: Communication: New Attendance Policy: All absences must be called into the office! If your child is absent and you would like to pick up their work, please notify the office and I can provide the materials necessary if notified in a timely manner. Communication: Email – bnunley@summithill.org Phone - 815-464-2285 Remind app

Parent Teacher Conferences: Conferences will become available online in the upcoming weeks. Reminders will be sent home to sign up for a slotted time. I hope to see you there!

It’s going to be a great year! Thank you for coming! It’s going to be a great year!
