Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year Type your text here: Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year Academy Charter School is a K-8 charter school. We are a publicly funded school founded by a parent group in 1993. The building we are currently in was first opened for students in 2001. Our school offers unique educational opportunities through our Core Knowledge Curriculum, our core virtues and rigorous academics. Find your child’s desk and look around the room – I’ll be sure to visit with you soon!

My name is Heather Rielley and I am thrilled to be here with you tonight. I live in Castle Rock with my boyfriend Ben and our sons. I completed my undergraduate work at CU Boulder and received Bachelors in both Biology and Kinesiology. I completed my Masters degree in Teaching Elementary Education at UNC. In my free time I enjoy hiking, reading and spending time with my family. ALL ABOUT ME

Homework should be complete and ready to turn in. Students should arrive to school in uniform and ready to begin their day! Homework should be complete and ready to turn in. We use Love and Logic discipline strategies as a school. I hold students accountable for their behavior and set expectations and consequences. Repeated behavioral or academic incidents will be brought to your attention so that we can work together as a team to address them and set your student on a path for success. Please do not allow your child to bring in items from home that are not school related ( no stuffies, toys, games, etc )

Math – every night unless there was a test Homework assignments will be written daily in your child’s planner. Please be sure to check their planner’s nightly. Here’s what to expect: Math – every night unless there was a test Spelling – Monday – Thursday with a test on Friday ( unless it’s a short week then our test day will change) Reading – Students are expected to read 15 minutes every night and will have additional homework on certain days. Science and Social Studies – rarely any homework, unless students are working on a project.

Students may bring a lunch from home or may eat hot lunch. Each student will be given a lunch number for hot lunches. Please use your Infinite Campus account to pay for hot lunches. Snacks and Drinks: Peanut items are fine for lunch but MAY NOT BE EATEN IN CLASS for snack. Water bottles should have names on them and contain WATER only.

We will take a couple of field trips this year We will take a couple of field trips this year. Our team is still working out the details. You will be informed weeks prior to any field trips and forms for permission and fees will be sent home.

Please let me know in advance if you are planning to bring in a treat for your child’s birthday. I will determine within the next couple of days whether we have any allergies in our room that you need to be aware of. Normally, birthday’s will be celebrated and treats will be passed out at the end of the school day.

CLASSROOM COORDINATOR Every family is required to complete 20 hours of volunteer work each year. Every $10 spent counts as one hour of volunteer time as well. - If you can only do at home projects let me know Volunteer opportunities will be included as they become available for our classroom via my weekly emails. CLASSROOM COORDINATOR I am also looking for someone to be my classroom coordinator. You will be my right arm for classroom parties and large projects throughout the year. Familiarity with Sign Up Genius is helpful. Please see me if you are interested.

Upcoming important dates will also be included in my weekly email. The Academy Charter School calendar can be found and downloaded from the school website homepage: www.academycharter.org Upcoming important dates will also be included in my weekly email.

Please read my weekly emails for any wish list items or supplies needed for upcoming class projects or parties. As of today: Please see the sticky notes on the board and take one if you are able to provide something for our class! Thank you.

Assignments will be graded and updated weekly in Infinite Campus Assignments will be graded and updated weekly in Infinite Campus. You can find the grading scale used in your ACS Handbook. Students will have one class day for each absence to make up their work. They will receive full credit if it is turned in within the allotted time frame. After this time has expired or the due date has passed, students will be graded accordingly: Late assignments will be deducted 10% per day, or one letter grade, up to 50%. Day 6, the student earns a zero for the assignment.

We have a 6 day specials rotation: I will include what the special is for each day in my weekly newsletter. Please wear athletic shoes for P.E. Use your best judgement when sending a sick child to school. A fever must be gone for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has a fever or has thrown up recently please keep them home.
