Vocabulary Matter – anything w/ mass & takes up space. Mass – amount of matter Volume – amount of space Physical Property – describes a substance (malleability/solubility) Chemical Property – describes ability to change or react (flammability) Physical Changes – does NOT change the identity (only appearance). Chemical Changes – changes into a new substance, rearranges atoms Combustibility – how easily something bursts into flame/explodes Malleability – ability to pound into sheets or bend into shapes
Vocabulary 10. State of Matter – solid, liquid, gas or plasma 11. Solid – definite shape & volume, particles vibrate. 12. Liquid – No shape, definite volume, particles slide 13. Gas – No shape or volume, particles move freely 14. Plasma – Super heated gas, conducts electricity 15. Kinetic Theory of Matter – All matter has particles that move depending on the amount of energy they have. 16. Solubility – ability to dissolve 17. Precipitate – a solid that is produced from 2 or more liquids reacting. 18. Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter – Matter cannot be created or destroyed. Mass of Reactants must = Mass of Products
Oops! We missed some! Reactivity is a chemical property that is the ability of one substance to react with another. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND
Mass, Volume, & Density D = M ÷ V Triple Beam Balance L W H Graduated cylinder D = M ÷ V Triple Beam Balance L W H Grams or Kg Cm3 mL g/Cm3 g/mL
Water Displacement Practice 11 mL – 8 mL = 3 cm3 Volume of Cherries
Water Displacement Practice 24 mL – 8 mL = 16 cm3 Volume of Balloon
Water Displacement Practice 9 mL – 6 mL = 3 cm3 Volume of Carrot
Water Displacement Practice 14 mL – 5 mL = 9 cm3 Volume of Artichoke
Mass, Volume, Density continued… The density of water is 1 g/mL An object with a density LESS than water (or any liquid) will FLOAT. An object with a density MORE than water (or any liquid) will SINK.
States of Matter Gas Particles move freely Liquid Particles slide around Plasma Particles ionized, conducts electricity Solid Particles vibrate

Indicators of Chemical Changes color odor temperature gas precipitate
Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass The wood & oxygen burn to make ashes, CO2 & water (H2O). The mass of the reactants is the SAME as the mass of the products!
Oops! We missed some! Weight is measured in Newton’s. Weight is measured using a scale. Weight can change based on an object’s position in the universe. Weight changes due to gravity. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND
