BEING HUMAN

ASPECTS OF BEING HUMAN Physical Psychological Emotional Social Spiritual

PHYSICAL HEALTH Refers to the condition of your physical body and includes Nutrition Exercise

PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH WHO defines mental health as: ‘A state of wellbeing in which an individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.’

EMOTIONAL HEALTH Definition from the Mental Health Foundation: ‘A positive sense of wellbeing which enables an individual to be able to function in society and meet the demands of everyday life…’ Emotional health also includes the ability to recognise emotions and to express those in appropriate ways.

SOCIAL HEALTH This refers to our ability to form healthy relationships with other people. It also refers to whether we are able to function appropriately in social situations. Are we able to effectively interpret the kind of behaviour most suitable for a certain situation and modify our behaviour to fit that situation? How does our behaviour make others feel?

SPIRITUAL HEALTH Spiritual health does not necessarily refer to religious health, although your religion may be a part of your spirituality. This refers to the health of your spirit, your soul. Even if you are not religious think of the big questions… Who are you? Why are you here? What is your purpose? How are you connected to others? Where did you come from? Where are you going?

RATE YOUR HEALTH Take a moment to reflect on your current levels of health in each of the 5 spheres: Physical Psychological Emotional Social Spiritual
