The Life Of Christ Lesson 9 The First Parables of Jesus Luke 12:1-59 - Jesus taught in parables July 17, 2019

Parable Of The Rich Fool - Luke 12:13-21 What was to happen to the rich man: He would not have “many years to come.” He would die and his “soul would be required” of him. (Ecclesiastes 12:7; Proverbs 27:1; Job 27:8) (Psalms 49:1-20) His amassed wealth would be left to someone else. (Ecclesiastes 2:18-23; 5:13-15; 6:1-2; Psalms 39:6; 49:10) He would be a “fool.” (Psalms 52:5-7) He could not secure his own life.

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 “For this reason I say to you (His disciples) …” (Matthew 6:25) Don’t worry about temporal life, but trust our “Father.” (verses 22-30) Remember this when we get to #3. Worry isn’t just about not having enough. Rich people worry too. (Luke 8:14) Make wise investments. He could not secure his own life. The Macedonians fit the latter model in that they did not allow their personal deprivation to limit their willingness to give and their giving. Perhaps their own deep [extreme] poverty had created in them a greater sympathy for the needs of others.

“Do Not Worry” Matthew 6:25-34 7 Reasons Why! God has given us our lives and bodies. God’s consideration of inferior creatures. It doesn’t accomplish anything. The Father’s care for that which is fleeting. Worry is something the Gentiles do. The Father knows our needs. It robs us of today. (from class on 11/14/18; MG)

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 “For this reason …” (Matthew 6:25) Seek God’s (spiritual) kingdom. (verses 31-32) Now (Isaiah 55:6), continually (1 Chronicles 16:10-11), committedly (Psalms 119:2); above all else (Matthew 6:33). Use your blessings as God intended. (verse 33) (Remember #1? 1 Timothy 6:17-19; Apply to 2 Corinthians 8:1-5; Luke 21:1-4. Make wise investments. He could not secure his own life. The Macedonians fit the latter model in that they did not allow their personal deprivation to limit their willingness to give and their giving. Perhaps their own deep [extreme] poverty had created in them a greater sympathy for the needs of others.

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 Determine your “treasure.” (verse 34) Where are we looking? (Hebrews 11:24-26) “Sell all that you possess … you shall have treasure in heaven” (Luke 18:22) Be ready for when our soul is “required” of us. (verses 35-40) Involves action … now and to come. Note the ESV. 1 Peter 1:13; 2 Peter 3:11-14; “So doing …” (verse 43) Paul’s feeling that he had to labor more than others… 1 Cor. 15:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:12-16

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 Understand Jesus is talking to you! (verses 41-48). Peter’s question … does Jesus answer? Are the apostles the “stewards” who are to give “their portion” in “due season”? (1 Corinthians 4:1-2; Ephesians 3:2) Anyone desiring to be “faithful and sensible” We are all God’s stewards of His blessings and gospel. (1 Peter 4:10) 1st to know His will and then to do it … much is required of us … Anyone desiring to be “faithful and sensible” (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong) (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong)

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 4 stewards referred to: (verses 41-48). The faithful and sensible steward who’s found “so doing” when his Master comes.(verses 42-44) One who puts off his master’s return (2 Peter 3; Amos 6:3) and walks according to the flesh (Galatians 5:16ff). (verses 45-46) One who knew what to do and didn’t do it. (Matthew 7:24-27)(verse 47) The ignorant and untaught. (Acts 17:23, 30) (verse 48) Anyone desiring to be “faithful and sensible” (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong) (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong)
