Chapter 2.4 “The Race for Empires” Main Ideas: Events in Europe affected settlement in North America. Several explorers searched for a Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. European nations raced to establish empires in North America. The Big Idea: Other European nations challenged Spain in the Americas. Key Terms and People: Protestant Reformation: A religious movement which began in small German towns and quickly spread through most of Europe. It was started by a Catholic priest named Martin Luther who broke from the Catholic Church because he thought it abused its power. Protestants: Reformers who protested some of the Catholic Church’s practices and they believe that God meant for religion to be simple. Spanish Armada: a huge fleet of warships meant to end English plans. It was made of 130 ships and 27,000 sailors planning to invade England because English ships had been stealing from Spanish merchant ships.
